Mark Kriseler (1958-2003), statewide chess enthusiast, passed away on December 16, 2003 due to medical complications. Mark was heavily involved in the promotion, and advancement of chess within the cities of Birch Run, Saginaw, and Bay City. He ran club tournaments in each of these locations monthly, making him one of the biggest organizers in the state.
Outside of directing, Mark was one of the strongest players in the Genesee/Saginaw counties. He also ranked 67th with Michigan’s Active players at a rating of 1900. For several years in the early 90’s and late 80’s, Mark maintained an Expert level rating. His largest recent accomplishment was winning the U.S. Amateur North Championship in 2001.
Mark recently formed an on-line discussion group on Yahoo to discuss the state of chess in Michigan, promote tournaments, and exchange ideas. Everyone is welcome to join, read the old messages, and make their voice heard. You can find this group on the web at:

Besides Michigan, Mark was an avid supporter of chess events in Colorado. In 1988-1990, he served as the Colorado State Chess Association’s President, as well as directing several adult and scholastic competitions. The Air Force also offered Mark a chance to explore his chess abilities abroad.
Mark was a good person, a good chess player, and a good friend. His loss will be felt by Michigan Chess for years to come.
