2011 Michigan Open Champions
For the second time in the 62-year history of the Michigan Open, it was held at McGuire’s golf resort in Cadillac. Between their games, several players were able to take advantage of the greens. The highlight of the tournament was the performance of 2011 Michigan Open Champion, Atulya Shetty. Atulya was undefeated, scoring 5 wins and 2 draws. 2011 was a hallmark year for Atulya as he tied for the Michigan Junior Championship, crossed the 2300 mark, and became the youngest player ever to win the Michigan Open. Earlier this summer, Atulya tied for first at the Cleveland Open. Apurva Virkud finished in clear second place with 4 wins, 1 draw, and a loss to our champion. Apurva’s Michigan Open result rounded out a summer of victories for Apurva which included winning the Susan Polgar Girls Invitational and crossing the 2000 mark at the Indianapolis Open.
To mark the return of the event, we hosted a unique challenge where players were able to add their 2011 score to their 1999 score. Justin Aldrich won the “Cadillac Shuffle” along with first place in the Reserve section. The Booster section was won by Ed Mandell whose 7-0 score was the only perfect one in the tournament. In order to add an element of “fun for all” to the event, we added a side competition for clubs. Clubs listed players from across the 3 sections and then added the top 4 scores together. The Genesee Chess Club, from the Flint area, and the Garden Market Café chess club, from Ann Arbor tied for first place. The Genesee chess club, which was led by Justin Aldrich took first place on tie-breaks. Leading the Garden Market Café was 2011 Michigan Open Champion, Atulya Shetty.
