About the Michigan Chess Association

The Michigan Chess Association (MCA) has been supporting chess in Michigan continuously since its founding in 1931. We are a non-profit organization, incorporated with the state of Michigan in 1973, that is dedicated to the advancement of the game. As the recognized state affiliate of our national organization, the U.S. Chess Federation, we are responsible for sponsoring and conducting all state championship tournaments for both youths and adults. Our extensive scholastic program includes holding the state team championship event for primary, elementary, middle school, and high school teams, plus the Michigan Junior Championship for individuals. At present, we have nine state championship tournaments available for adults, with all but the Senior Championship and Women's Championship open to everyone. We frequently lend assistance and give publicity to others in the state that run chess tournaments and promote chess events.

We provide chess information via the Internet by our website and eBulletin, and via our official publications Michigan Chess Magazine and Michigan Chess Tournament Bulletin. This information includes scheduled tournaments, past tournament results, chess clubs, chess instruction, chess books and equipment, past and present state chess title-holders, Michigan Hall of Fame members, interesting chess games, the enactment of rules for play and awards, and many other aspects of chess. As part of our extensive commitment to scholastic chess education, we make instructional material available to those who teach chess to young players in our schools and clubs. Membership in the MCA is open to all, including people from out-of-state who would like to enjoy our fine magazine.

Our Mission

The mission of the Michigan Chess Association is to promote growth and support opportunities for Michigan chess players, to provide avenues for improving their knowledge and skills, to create venues for players to engage in chess activities, both serious and casual, to foster chess related communication between players, clubs and organizations that support chess locally, nationally and internationally, and to represent the best interests of the Michigan chess community.

To accomplish our mission, MCA will:

  1. Remain fiscally/and financially sound for its constituents:
  2. Publish a quality state magazine at least 6 times a year, (offering members the option of online or hardcopy);
  3. Maintain a current/updated website listing a regular schedule of events and providing a clearinghouse for appropriate recognition and news related to the state organization, events and activities;
  4. Hold quarterly business meetings and publish its actions/minutes on the website ;
  5. Schedule regular opportunities, events and tournaments for rated play for all levels of players with a focus on providing competitive events of national caliber;
  6. Support the growth of chess throughout the state by fostering a strong program of scholastic chess competitions, tournaments and activities;
  7. Institute a forum/network for ongoing chess dialogue/communication for all constituent individuals, groups and organizations;
  8. Build strong partnerships with other chess-related organizations by representing the interests of its constituents at the state, national and international levels. This includes providing support for its members that receive invitations to national and international events.

This is a mission statement drafted by Michigan Chess member Lon Rutkofske and presented to the board during their 24-Jun-2011 meeting. The board agreed to share this draft mission statement out with our members.
