HANDOUT SHEETS FOR IMPROVING CHESS SKILLS

 

These handout sheets are being made available to help with teaching chess skills. They may be used and copied by anyone, provided they are not sold for commercial gain.


All these handout sheets are written with language a child in first grade and up should be able to easily understand. Each of the handout sheets is given a skill level according to the target audience, as follows:

 

Level 1: Beginner. Does not know how to play chess.

Level 2: Novice. Knows how to play chess, but is unfamiliar with chess notation.

Level 3: Intermediate. Knows how to read chess notation.

Level 4: Advanced. Rating of 1000 or higher.

How To Keep Score: Level 2. How to read and write chess notation.


Value Of The Pieces: Level 2-4. A list of the relative value of pieces and pawns, including tips to help in deciding whether to make a trade.


White Opening Play: Level 3. How to open a chess game with the white pieces.


Black Opening Play: Level 3. How to open a chess game with the black pieces.
