HOW TO PLAY AT THE INTERNET CHESS CLUB

Click here to download a Word version of this file

The best place to play chess on the Internet is the Internet Chess Club. You need to download an interface, which means simply getting the software that will put a chessboard and other graphics on your computer screen so you can play on it. Here is how to do this:

HOW TO GET THE INTERFACE

(1)  Log on to the Internet.
(2)  Go to http://www.chessclub.com, the homepage of the ICC.
(3)  Click on "Newcomers."
(4)  (1)   Click on "Download Software" at the bottom of the page.
(5)
Download the BlitzIn interface by going to 1. Click here to download BlitzIn.
(6)  Select "run this program from its current location."
(7)
The file takes several minutes to download. After the file has been completely downloaded, you need to run it. Click on the directions for "How to run the file you downloaded" from the bulleted list near the bottom of the ICC download page and follow them.

HOW TO PLAY ON THE INTERNET CHESS CLUB

(1)  Click on the BlitzIn icon. (On some computers you must log onto the Internet first)
(2)  When the ICC Login Information display comes up, click "connect as guest."
(3) When prompted, log on as a guest by typing a "g" and hitting the "enter" key.
(4)  If a "tip of the day" comes on your screen, delete it by clicking the "x."
(5)  If an invitation for a registered account comes on your screen, click "cancel."
(6) You need to make some choices from the menu at the top of the screen if this is the first time you are using the program, as follows:
  a) From the "Window" menu, select "Tile Vertically."
  b) From the "Options" menu, click on "Pieces" and select      the "Vector" style.
  c) You will see your screen divided into three sectors. Basically, you need a bigger chessboard and do not need to use graph seeks. You should enlarge the chessboard by dragging the edge of the board so it covers the graph seeks and thus takes up two thirds of your screen. If the graph seeks sector is not the center sector, switch it with the center sector by drag and drop.

Now you are ready to get an opponent and play chess. You can get a game by either issuing a challenge or accepting someone else's challenge. To issue a challenge, click on "Seek a Game" and then do the following: First, de-select "Rated Game." Second, set the time limit to what you want (I suggest somewhere from 10 to 15 minutes for the game with 0 increment). Then issue the seek. To accept a challenge, type "play" (space) "the person's name" [such as "guest546"].
Once the game starts, you can talk to your opponent by typing "t" (space) "opponent's name" (space) and then your message. The "t" is an alias for "tell." Once you have talked to the person, you can type a ".", called a dot, instead of their name, to talk again.

You can tell someone your first name, the state where you live, and your age.
Never give out your school, last name, address, or phone number.
