Michigan players at the 2002 USCF High School National
Championship did the following:
Coach Michael Skidmore leads students to Kearsley's 4th National
Championship.
Michigan Players and Teams also did well in the U1300 Section:
KEARSLEY WINS 2002 USCF HS U1000 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!
Kearsley's chess team won the U1000 National High School Chess Championship
tournament April 12-14, 2002 in Louisville, KY.
Kearsley finished first amoung 100 teams. Kearsley scored 24 of a possible
28 pts. They were 1st, ahead of Provo, UT by a point and a half. This is
the fourth National victory for Kearsley. The team won at King of Prussia,
PA in 1986, Albuquerque, NM in 1988, and East Rutherford, New Jersey in 1996.
This is the 17th consecutive nationals competition for the Kearsley Hornets.
There were over 600 players in the section. Travis Sanders (10th Grade)
finished 4th overall and lead the team with 6 1/2 pts. David Whatling (10th
Grade)
scored 6 pts and finished 7th. Erich Wagner (11th Grade) netted 6 pts and
was 19th overall. Eric Myers (Grade 9) with 5 1/2 pts was the other member
of the top 4.
Jason Brownfield (Grade 11) was right behind Eric with 5 pts.
Jason Sowa (10th Grade) finished with 4 1/2. Chris Smith (10th Grade) Scott
Thach (9th Grade) and
Troy Vinton (12th Grade) all went 4 - 3 to complete Kearsley's scoring.
Kent Hershberger (11th Grade), Rosanna Dyer (12th Grade), and Adam Laferriere
(12th grade) gained valuable experience competing in the Open Section.

We had 42 participants in the K-12 Junior Championship.
We had 68 players in the K-8 Young Junior Championship.
There were 42 players in the K-8 Young Junior Reserve.
We had 56 players in the K-5 Children's Championship.
There were 30 players in the K-5 Children's Reserve.
There were 60 participants in the K-3 Young Children's Championship
We had 34 entries in the K-3 Young Children's Reserve.
This was won by Nate Solon and Zack Madden, both with 4.5
This was won by Tim Moroney and Michael Collins, both with 5.0
This was won by Michael Rogers and Ian Scott, both with 4.5
This was won by Spencer Finegold with 5.0
This was won by Daniel Schwartz with 5.0.
This was won by Adam Ford with 5.0
This was won by Andrew Elenbogen with 5.0.
