The Michigan Alternative Athletic Association (MAAA) held its second annual State Chess Championship on March 21, 2003 in Onondaga, MI. Highfields, Inc. played host to this event that drew in nine schools from across the state. Teams came from Alma, Battle Creek, Lansing, Livonia, and Mt. Pleasant, Onondaga, Romulus, Shepherd, and Waterford.

The State Championship was won by Mt. Pleasant’s Oasis Alternative High School, coached by Jeff Platte. Alma’s Alternative High School, coached by Peter Dollard, was competitively close on their heels. The tournament was a three-round Swiss tournament in six sections.

Six players from three schools received first place medals for perfect scores in their sections. They are Jacob Hyde and Don Myer (Alma), Hannah Green, Brandon McQueen, and T.J. Sweet (Mt. Pleasant), and Brandon Terwilliger (Shepherd).
