Are you ready for the new millenium?  Like it or not, we are about to embark on a journey into the future.  Throughout history, as the centuries changed, institutions flourished and faded away.  What awaits MCA?  Will we flourish?  Or will we fade away?  Only time will tell.  If we are to flourish, though, it's going to take hard work by a lot of people who believe MCA is important enough that it's worth their time and effort.
I think that MCA is worth my time and effort.  When there seemed to be absolutely no one else willing to be president,  I said OK, I'll do it.  You will have to suffer through my inexperience while I learn how to do the job, but I will do the best I can.  I can do a lot better job, though, if I can call upon a community of chess players, with a wealth of skills and talents, that wants the job to be done.
What about you?  Do you care?  Does MCA have any relevance to your life as a chess player?  If MCA doesn't make a difference, then we have become obsolete and we should fade away.  If MCA is to have an important role to play in the life of Michigan chess players, then we must know what your needs are as a chess player.  What do you expect from us?  What would you like for us to do for you?  What are we doing that you'd rather we didn't?  We need to hear from you.  Write us:

Call us on the toll-free number 1-888-MICHESS, or email us (michess@michess.org).   Let us know what we're doing wrong.   Let us know what we're doing right.  Let us know what doesn't matter one way or the other.
We also need your time.  MCA is a volunteer member organization.  Volunteer members run it.  Volunteer members benefit from it.  And volunteer members make it work.  Not all of the things we could be doing, or even should be doing, are getting done.  We need more TDs.  We need more organizers.  We need more photographers.  We need more articles for both Michigan Chess and Michigan Chess Online.  We need more chess coaches in the schools.  Chess coaches need more assistants.  TDs, organizers, even editors need more assistants.  We need people  who can help spread the word that here is a community of chess players, so that when a new player starts looking for other players, we can be found.  So that every newspaper, every TV and radio station, every school and every city hall can say "This is where you can find a chess club."
So what's it to be?  Are we to be a strong, dynamic, successful organization, or are we obsolete?  It's up to you.
